Week 43 - Getting ‘a job’ isn’t the problem, it’s a symptom

This week, one of my clients sent me a book she thought I’d like, which is so cute and sweet. She also included a Thank You note (also so cute and sweet) and it said ‘thank you for helping me get off the hamster wheel’. And that really stuck with me. It was like, “damn, I’m really out here doing it. I’m creating the world I want to live in.”

You know sometimes I wish the work I do was “easier”.

As in, “hey, do you want to make more money??” and like who doesn’t so people sign up.

OR “hey do you want a better job??” yea, have you seen the stats about how unhappy people are at work, of course people want a better job.

But my work isn’t about more money or a better job SPECIFICALLY and yet my clients all end up making more money and getting a better job.

But that’s not what it’s actually about and to reduce this work to that honestly sells you and I short.

I’m not going to help you with your resume, I’m not going to coach you to apply to 100’s of jobs. Why? Because I personally think that stuff is hella boring for me and you. But also because I don’t believe that your problem is ‘a job’.

Being in a job that you don’t like is not the root problem it’s just a symptom. A symptom of what?

Of you not having CLARITY.

Clarity about what you actually value

Clarity and confidence in your decisions

Clarity about your needs

Clarity about the life you really want

Without clarity, you’re just making guesses. And my guess is that you are probably like a lot of us (ME included) who kind of fell into their first role and have now accumulated so much experience that you feel kinda stuck doing what you’ve always done because it’s what you know. But it’s NOT what you absolutely love though.

How do I know that, Alli? Because that’s my story and the story of sooo many of my clients and people who DM me on Linkedin. Each one of my clients has a different dream, has a fantasy of a different life, where they are doing work that they love and that they find meaningful. And they do it in a way that gives them MORE freedom. The holy grail….freedom.

Because I work with sales leaders in tech, it’s even MORE pronounced just how many of them fell into a role early on in their career and now are on a path that doesn’t really fulfill them. Why? Because NOONE WENT TO SCHOOL TO BE IN TECH SALES. It doesn’t exist! It’s starting to slowly exist now, but only because there are a gajillion sales tech jobs out there (I fact checked that number, it checks out.

That’s why the work I do as a coach is so important. None of us really truly dreamed of being in tech sales. It wasn’t really even possible to be a dream when we were kids. BUT, it makes you a lot of money….so sign us up! Right?

Sure. And I’m sure that it was really exhilarating for awhile. Heck, I loved it. The expense accounts. The parties. The trips. A blast.

But at a certain point it felt so empty to me. What impact am I really having on the world right now? Am I creating the world that I want to live in? Or am I trying to fit into a world that makes me money and that I have to escape from at the end of the day because it’s so exhausting?

I don’t know about you but I don't want to live a life that I have to escape from. And when you have a job that is about making money and doesn’t fulfill your deeper need for meaningful work, well that’s a sure fire way to create a jail break type of life. 5pm….get me out of here!

You deserve better than that. And the only reason why you don’t have that right now is lack of CLARITY - of what you want and that it could even be possible.

But here's the thing.....I have a bit of a cheat code for you. If you’re in sales and have been for awhile, and especially if you’re in leadership and have been for awhile….you could become a coach full-time!

Like I said above….there are a gajillion tech sales jobs out there, with more and more being created every single year (literally 3,000+ new tech companies come out of incubators each year now (actual fact not just exaggeration)) so guess what allllllllll the people who work in these tech sales jobs need?? A COACH.

I've had a coach for 8 years....all 8 of those years I've been in Sales.

I’ve coached so many of my clients on how to start building their brand and coaching business while still in your corporate roles. Build the foundation first, then start building the house ya know.

And they love it. They are finding so much meaning in coaching others. They are feeling so fulfilled.

And all of this become possible because of CLARITY.

Clarity of who they are, what’s important to them, what kind of world they want to live in, who they want to live in it with, and how they can make it come to life.

THAT'S the work we do together in my coaching. Exactly that.

So if your imposter syndrome is RAGING right now just reading this, I got you.
